Make differences visible

Contrast is a difference between visual qualities, such as light and dark, smooth and rough, or large and small. Strong contrast can help a detail stand out, but the surrounding arrangement matters. A pale mark on a pale background may be hard to distinguish; darkening the mark can make its boundary clearer.
