Describe before interpreting

Begin by noticing what is visible: marks, colors, shapes, materials, and their arrangement. Separate these observations from guesses about a work’s meaning. A picture shows an empty chair beside an open window. This is evidence you can describe; the owner’s feelings are not directly visible. An interpretation should explain the details that support it.
