A simple cue for depth

When one object hides part of another, overlap can suggest which is closer to the viewer. If a cup covers part of a book in a drawing, the cup usually appears in front. Overlap gives a relative depth cue, not an exact measurement of distance. Artists can also deliberately make such cues ambiguous.
