Evidence for black holes

A black hole has an event horizon, a boundary from within which light cannot escape to distant observers. Evidence can come from nearby orbital motions, radiation from surrounding matter, and gravitational waves. Bright material around a black hole lies outside the horizon; it does not mean light escapes from inside it.
