Interpreting cosmological redshift

As the universe expands, light traveling through it can be stretched to longer wavelengths. This cosmological redshift helps study expansion and distant galaxies. Motion within groups and clusters also affects measured shifts. Redshift is an observation; converting it into distance or look-back time requires a cosmological model.
