Expansion and dark energy

Observations of supernovae and other cosmological evidence indicate that the universe’s expansion has accelerated during its recent history. Dark energy names the component used to explain this behavior in standard models. Its physical nature is uncertain. It is distinct from dark matter, which is inferred through its gravitational role in structure and motion.
