Why astronomers infer dark matter

Galaxy motions, gravitational lensing, and other observations indicate more gravitating matter than can be accounted for by observed ordinary matter in standard cosmological models. Dark matter is the name for this inferred component. Its microscopic identity remains unresolved; measuring a gravitational effect is not the same as detecting a particular new particle.
