Gravity bends the path of light

Mass curves spacetime and can redirect light from a background source. Gravitational lensing may distort a galaxy’s image, magnify it, or produce multiple images. Astronomers use lensing to constrain mass distributions, including matter that emits little detectable light. The interpretation depends on geometry and a model of the lens.
