Reading a stellar diagram

A Hertzsprung–Russell diagram compares stellar luminosity with surface temperature. Main-sequence stars fuse hydrogen in their cores. Giants, white dwarfs, and main-sequence stars occupy different regions. Stars with similar temperatures can have very different luminosities because their sizes differ. Check axis direction before interpreting a diagram.
