Brightness and distance

Luminosity is an object’s total emitted power; apparent brightness measures what reaches an observer. For an isotropic source in transparent space, received flux follows an inverse-square relationship with distance. If distance doubles while luminosity stays fixed, the flux becomes one quarter. Dust and variability can complicate real observations.

Practice

Under these assumptions, how does received flux change when distance doubles?
