Light-years measure distance

A light-year is the distance light travels in a year in a vacuum. It is a unit of distance, despite the word year. Because light takes time to travel, seeing a distant object means receiving light emitted earlier. A nearby object and a distant object are therefore not seen at the same stage of their histories.
