Understanding Moon phases

The Sun usually illuminates half the Moon. As the Moon orbits Earth, we see different portions of that illuminated half, producing the phases. Ordinary phases are not caused by Earth’s shadow. The Moon can also be visible during daylight; its position relative to the Sun and the horizon matters.
