Recording the night sky

An observation is more useful when it includes the time, location, direction, and conditions. A bright point could be a star, a planet, or an aircraft; appearance alone may be insufficient. Comparing repeated observations with a sky chart helps identify patterns and distinguish what was seen from an explanation.
