Detecting a planet’s transit

A transit occurs when a planet crosses its star’s face from our viewpoint, causing a small dip in measured brightness. Repeated dips can reveal an orbital period. Dip depth helps estimate the planet-to-star size ratio, but other effects can mimic a planet. Follow-up observations help test the interpretation.
