Detecting a star’s wobble

A planet and its star both move around their shared center of mass. Astronomers can detect the star’s motion toward and away from us through shifts in spectral lines. This radial-velocity method helps constrain a planet’s mass, but the orbital orientation and stellar activity affect interpretation.
