What a survey can miss

Astronomical surveys do not detect every object equally well. Transit surveys more easily find large planets with short periods and suitable orbital alignment. A sample can therefore differ from the underlying population. Estimating how common a type of object is requires accounting for detection limits, uncertainty, and selection effects.
