Reading patterns in a spectrum

A spectrum separates light by wavelength. Atoms and molecules can produce characteristic absorption or emission features. Astronomers compare these features with laboratory measurements to infer composition and physical conditions. A spectrum may combine several sources, so interpreting a single line without context can be misleading.
