How stars change

Stars form from collapsing gas and spend much of their lives fusing hydrogen in their cores. Initial mass strongly influences their evolution. Massive stars use their fuel much more rapidly and generally have shorter lives. The Sun will eventually leave a white dwarf; it is not massive enough to become a neutron star or stellar-mass black hole.
