Measuring stellar parallax

As Earth travels around the Sun, a nearby star appears to shift slightly against more distant background stars. This annual parallax helps measure distance. With the same observing baseline, a smaller parallax corresponds to a greater distance. Measurement uncertainty becomes especially important when the shift is very small.
