Circulation and gas exchange

The circulatory system transports substances around the body. The heart pumps blood through vessels. Red blood cells carry much of the oxygen using haemoglobin, while blood also transports nutrients and wastes. In human lungs, oxygen moves from the air spaces into blood, and carbon dioxide moves from blood into the air spaces. The heart then helps deliver oxygen-rich blood to body tissues. Breathing moves air; circulation moves blood.
