Classifying living things
Biological classification groups organisms using shared characteristics and evolutionary relationships. A scientific species name has two parts: a genus name followed by a species-specific name. Organisms in the same genus are generally more closely related than organisms in different genera. A shared common name or similar appearance does not always show close relationship. Bats and birds both fly, but bats are mammals. Classification uses multiple lines of evidence, not a single visible feature.
