Enzymes and activation energy

Enzymes are biological catalysts. They lower the activation energy needed for a reaction by providing a different reaction pathway. They do not change the reaction's overall free-energy difference or its equilibrium position. An enzyme's active site interacts with particular substrates. Temperature or pH changes can alter its shape and activity. Increasing temperature may speed a reaction over a limited range, but excessive heat can disrupt enzyme structure and reduce activity.
