Ionic and covalent bonding
Atoms can join through chemical bonds. A covalent bond involves shared pairs of electrons. Ionic bonding is the attraction between oppositely charged ions. Within a water molecule, hydrogen and oxygen share electrons in covalent bonds. In solid sodium chloride, positive sodium ions and negative chloride ions attract one another throughout a crystal. A bond is not a tiny physical stick: these models describe electrical interactions.
