Oxidation and reduction

Redox reactions transfer electrons. Oxidation is loss of electrons, and reduction is gain of electrons. The two processes occur together: electrons released by one species are accepted by another. When a neutral magnesium atom loses two electrons to become a magnesium ion, it is oxidized. The species accepting those electrons is reduced. The words oxidation and reduction describe electron changes, not simply whether oxygen appears in the reaction.

Practice

A species gains electrons. What happens to it?
