Reading the periodic table

The periodic table arranges elements by increasing atomic number. The atomic number counts protons and identifies an element. Elements in the same column often have similar chemical properties because of their outer electrons. Oxygen has atomic number 8. An oxygen atom always has 8 protons, even if its neutron count or electric charge changes. Do not confuse atomic number with the average atomic mass shown on many tables.
