Physical and chemical changes

A physical change alters a substance's form or state without changing its chemical identity. A chemical change produces different substances through the rearrangement of atoms. Melting ice is a physical change because the substance remains water. Burning a candle's wax is a chemical change: the wax reacts with oxygen and forms new substances. The melting wax near the flame and the burning wax are different processes.
