Interest rates and the economy

Central banks influence monetary conditions through policy rates and other tools. Higher rates can make borrowing less attractive and affect spending, exchange rates, and expectations. These channels work with delays and do not affect everyone equally. Monetary policy cannot immediately remove a physical shortage such as a failed harvest.
