Look for a complete path

In a simple circuit diagram, a source supplies energy and a conducting path connects the components. Opening a switch breaks that path and stops the sustained current in the simple loop. A lamp is not supplied with a one-way stream that vanishes inside it. Current circulates through the complete circuit while energy is transferred to the lamp.
