Start with the need

Engineering uses knowledge and evidence to develop solutions to practical needs. Suppose students find a reading stand uncomfortable. Before choosing materials, ask who uses it, what they need to do, and where it will be used. A clear problem statement describes the need without prematurely choosing a solution. Different designs can then be compared against that need.
