State the useful output

Energy efficiency compares useful output energy with input energy over the same period and system boundary. For a motor, motion may be the useful output; for a heater, transferred heat may be useful. A comparison is misleading if the tasks or boundaries differ. Higher efficiency also does not guarantee lower total energy use when a device operates much longer.
