Track energy through a device

Energy changes form as a device operates. A small motor can convert electrical energy into motion while some energy becomes heat. Calling that heat a loss means it is not useful for the intended motion, not that energy has disappeared. Define the useful output before comparing designs because usefulness depends on the task.
