Trace pushes and pulls

A force is a push or pull. A book resting on a table has weight acting downward and a support force acting upward. Rest does not mean that no forces act. To understand a stationary object, identify the forces and whether they balance. Their locations also matter because forces can make an object rotate as well as move in a straight line.
