A design affects resources and work throughout its life, including production, transport, use, repair, and disposal. A replaceable part may make repair easier even if it adds initial complexity. Comparisons need the same service and a stated lifetime. An option with low production impact can still have high use-phase impact, so avoid judging the whole life from one stage.
