Tension pulls a member apart, while compression squeezes it together. In a simple hanging sign, a cable carries tension. A supporting column commonly carries compression. Real structures may combine these with bending or twisting. Naming the loading type helps identify likely behavior, but the label alone does not establish a safe capacity. Geometry, material, connections, and conditions still matter.
