A reading is an estimate

A sensor responds to a physical quantity and produces a signal. Its reading may differ from the quantity of interest because of calibration, placement, response time, or noise. A temperature sensor beside a warm motor may not represent the room. Ask what was measured, where, and under what conditions before using the value to control a system.
