Follow the load to a support

A structure carries loads to its supports. A shelf transfers the weight of its contents through the shelf and its attachments to the wall or frame. Studying only the flat shelf misses the connections that carry the load onward. In a design sketch, trace the entire path and identify each connection instead of judging strength from appearance alone.
