Allow for variation

Manufactured dimensions vary. A tolerance describes an allowed range rather than a promise that every part has exactly the nominal dimension. For a lid and box, both parts’ possible sizes affect whether they fit. A prototype made from unusually favorable parts may hide a problem. Examine relevant combinations within the allowed ranges instead of checking only the nominal sizes.
