Distinguish carbon reservoirs and transfers

Carbon is stored in rocks, soils, water, air, and living things. Photosynthesis moves carbon from carbon dioxide into organic matter; respiration and decomposition return some carbon to air or water. Burning fossil fuels transfers carbon from long-term geological reservoirs into the active cycle. Carbon cycling does not guarantee that the amount in each reservoir stays constant.
