Matter cycles while energy flows

Decomposers, including many fungi and bacteria, break down dead organic material and release nutrients that can be used again. Matter moves through these processes, while energy is transferred and eventually dispersed as heat. Nutrient recycling does not mean that all energy is recycled through the same organisms. The rate of decomposition depends on conditions such as temperature, moisture, and oxygen.
