Define the system you are studying

An ecosystem includes a community of organisms and the nonliving environment with which they interact. It can be studied at different scales, such as a patch of soil or a forest. Its boundary depends on the question and is not necessarily a physical wall. Water, organisms, and other materials can cross the boundary, so exchanges with surrounding areas may matter.
