Follow water below the surface

Groundwater occupies pores and cracks beneath the water table. An aquifer can store and transmit groundwater; it is not necessarily an underground open lake. Recharge occurs when water reaches this saturated zone. Pumping can lower groundwater levels when withdrawals exceed replenishment, and effects may extend beyond the well itself. Rates and connections vary across locations.
