Examine connections as well as area

Habitat fragmentation divides a habitat into smaller or more isolated patches. Two landscapes with the same total habitat area can differ in connectivity and edge conditions. Some organisms may struggle to move between isolated patches. A corridor can help certain movements, but its usefulness depends on the species, design, and surrounding landscape. Area alone is an incomplete description.
