Treat soil as a living system

Soil contains mineral particles, organic matter, water, air, and organisms. Spaces between particles influence how water and air move. Compaction can reduce these spaces, changing infiltration and root conditions. Soil is more than a surface for plants to stand on, and its properties vary with location and history. A single observation may not represent an entire field.
