Do not assume every response is gradual

Some environmental systems respond gradually to pressure, while others can shift sharply when conditions cross a threshold. Removing a pressure may not always retrace the original path, because the changed system can maintain different conditions. A possible threshold is not a prediction of its exact location. Look for evidence and state the limits of what observations can establish.
