Combine ages to constrain a deposit

Numerically dated layers can bracket a deposit’s age when their relationships are clear. If an undisturbed sedimentary layer lies above an older volcanic ash and below a younger ash, its deposition falls between their formation ages, provided the ashes were deposited when they formed. Reworked ash would require a different interpretation.
