Recognize separation at a boundary

At divergent boundaries, plates move apart. At mid-ocean ridges, mantle material rises and can partially melt as pressure decreases. Magma can then cool to form new oceanic crust. Divergence also occurs within continents during rifting. The defining motion is separation, not the presence of a particular coastline or continent.
