Locate an event using wave arrivals

Earthquakes release energy that travels as seismic waves. P waves generally arrive before S waves at a station. A larger gap between their arrival times generally indicates a greater distance from the source, for a given Earth model. Records from multiple stations constrain the location better than a single station does.
