Distinguish bending from displacement

A fold is a bend in rock layers. A fault is a fracture along which displacement has occurred. Temperature, pressure, rock properties, and the rate of deformation influence how rocks respond to stress. A visible crack alone does not prove fault movement; evidence of offset helps establish displacement.
