Interpret fossils in their rock context

Fossils include preserved remains and traces of past life. A shell in marine sediment can inform an interpretation of the depositional environment. Transport or reworking may move older fossils into younger deposits, so context matters. The absence of a fossil is also not proof that the organism never lived there; preservation is incomplete.
