Start with observations

Geologists use rocks, landforms, and measurements to investigate Earth. A field note should distinguish an observation from an explanation. Seeing rounded grains is an observation; suggesting transport by water is an interpretation that needs other evidence. Record the location, scale, and visible features before deciding how a rock formed.
